Found at an estate sale in Beverly Hills, this vintage American silver-plated Monteith was made by Towle Silversmiths and bears the Towle mark and pattern number 3072.
Its distinctive scalloped, notched rim tells us what it was made for. A Monteith was traditionally filled with chilled water so wine glasses could be suspended around the rim, cooling their bowls before they were brought to the table.
Once an elegant and rather extravagant piece of tableware, it has found another purpose. Filled with wax and three wicks, it returns to the center of the table—this time holding candlelight.
