A substantial cut-crystal dresser jar with deep starburst and diamond-cut patterns beneath an ornate repoussé sterling silver lid. The heavily faceted crystal catches and fractures the candlelight, giving the vessel an almost jewel-like glow when lit.
The lid was made by Shreve & Co., the celebrated San Francisco silversmith and luxury jeweler. Its rim bears the SHREVE & CO. name alongside the firm's bell-shaped hallmark, as well as STERLING 925/1000, identifying it as solid sterling silver rather than silver plate.
Dating to the late nineteenth or early twentieth century, the lid is richly worked with floral and scrolling repoussé decoration characteristic of the period. The stamped number 20 appears to be Shreve & Co.'s item, shape, or pattern number. Paired with the deeply cut crystal beneath it, the piece has the weight and presence of something made to be kept for generations.
